Business Development Manager

Destination Ann Arbor has a new and exciting opportunity to join their team as a Business Development Manager.
Summary: The Business Development Manager is responsible for promoting and selling Ann Arbor and the Washtenaw County region as a premier destination for meetings, conferences, and events. This role will focus on developing and maintaining relationships with key clients, including national associations, corporate groups, SMERF, Corporate, Government and meeting planners, to drive room-night bookings and economic impact for the local community.
Sales Development:
● Identify, prospect, and secure new business opportunities from local, regional, and national markets.
● Create and execute a comprehensive sales strategy to meet goals.
● Prepare creative, high quality bid proposals and presentations.
● Attend trade shows, conferences, and networking events to promote Destination Ann Arbor.
Account Management:
● Build and maintain strong relationships with meeting planners, event organizers, and industry partners.
● Act as a primary point of contact for clients, ensuring seamless communication and support throughout the sales and event planning process; includes site visits and tours with clients.
● Manage a portfolio of accounts, focusing on retention and growth.
Collaboration:
● Build relationships and partner with local hotels, venues, and other stakeholders to craft compelling proposals and maximize client satisfaction.
● Collaborate across all departments within the organization for internal and external sales/service needs
Data and Reporting:
● Maintain accurate records of sales activities and account details in CRM systems.
● Prepare regular reports on sales progress, market trends, and client feedback for leadership review.
● Monitor and evaluate the performance of secured business to ensure objectives are met.
Market Expertise:
● Stay informed about industry trends, competitor activities, and emerging opportunities in the meetings and events industry.
● Position Ann Arbor as a top-tier destination by highlighting its unique offerings, attractions, and value propositions.
Travel: Regular local travel in personal vehicle is required for local organization business. Some air and/or road travel is required for client meetings, industry conferences and tradeshows, events, and professional development opportunities.
Required Education and Experience:
A 4-year degree in Hospitality or the equivalent amount of professional work experience preferred. Prior sales experience in the tourism, hospitality, or meetings industry preferred. Proven track record of achieving sales targets and building strong client relationships. Exceptional communication, presentation, and negotiation skills. Proficiency in CRM tools, Microsoft Office Suite, and virtual meeting platforms. Ability to travel for sales missions, trade shows, and client meetings as needed. Strong knowledge of Ann Arbor and Washtenaw County's attractions, accommodations, and events infrastructure preferred. Experience working with national associations, SMERF Groups, Corporate, Government or corporate meeting planners preferred. Passion for promoting the local community and contributing to its economic growth. Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications: A valid Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle.
